The idea

Every generation declares narrative dead or reborn; this collection ignores the obituary cycle and asks practitioners instead. Novelists, reporters, game writers, oral historians, and one very funny archivist each answer the same brief: show us where stories are going by showing us your desk.

The result is deliberately mixed in register — reported essays beside craft notes beside arguments — because that is what narrative actually looks like from the inside.

The future of narrative will not be announced. It is already being drafted, in rooms without cameras.

Scope and shape

Inside the volume

  • Sixteen commissioned pieces, half from writers publishing in book form for the first time.
  • Four dialogues pairing an established voice with an emerging one.
  • A craft appendix: working methods, revision rituals, and rejected outlines.
  • An introduction tracing narrative's last three supposed deaths — and survivals.
