About Me.
Elliot Vance writes and edits from New York, where he reports on labour, technology and reading culture. He makes narrative nonfiction and criticism, trained through an MFA in Creative Writing, and has been supported by a national arts fellowship and an independent press foundation.
As an editor he shapes long-form manuscripts for independent and established presses, and he is drawn to voices that rarely get a hearing and stories that unsettle the usual account.
Away from the desk he is usually in a Brooklyn archive, secondhand bookshop or cafe, following the next lead.
Elliot Vance
A short history.
First bylines
City-hall reporting and arts coverage for weeklies, learning to file clean copy on a forty-minute deadline.
MFA and the long form
Graduate study in creative writing; first magazine features on labour and technology. Thesis became the seed of the Machine Age reporting.
National Press Fellowship
A year of supported reporting across factory towns and data-centre counties — the work that became the Meridian and Signal features.
Editing and the column
Began editing long-form for independent presses and launched The Printkeeper Interviews, now in its fourth year.
Books in progress
At work on Notes on Attention and the edited Forthcoming Collection, while reporting The Machine Age full-time.
How I work.
Slowly, then all at once. I take on a small number of assignments each year so every piece gets the reporting it deserves: documents first, interviews second, and at least one visit to every place named in the text.
I am happy to write, to edit, or to do both — and equally happy to say no quickly when a brief is not a fit. The fastest way to reach me is the form on the contact page.
